So what are the issues?
MOSES is a regional organization, and thus brings people together to address big issues -- like health care. Maybe you have health care. Not everyone in our congregation does. And some people must pay dearly for even limited coverage. We
are asking that the issue be brought to the forefront of the
legislative agenda and that the governor will commit to ensuring the
necessary steps take place so real action can be taken.
People fall all over the map on the issue of immigration. However, I hope no Christian wants parents torn away from their children. MOSES is asking that fair and humane legislation be developed to deal with the immigration issue. We’re not saying how it should be solved – just that it must be addressed in a way that is both just and merciful.
The development of effective transportation is another big issue – especially for our area. It is an issue that affects all of us. Even if you don’t feel like you need this kind of transportation, you would benefit. The lack of regional transportation is a big barrier to a positive economic future in our area. And I bet that if it were available, you’d be happy to hop onto a light rail train that would take you to Metro Airport (at least I know I would be delighted to eliminate the hassle of airport parking).
You
might think an issue like getting grocery stores in Detroit has nothing
to do with you....until you realize that grocery stores in Belleville
and Ypsi are nearly nonexistent. My hometown village of 5000 had more stores where a person could get fresh food than exist in the Ypsi/Belleville area combined. Yes, I know there are a number of Meijers and WalMarts around. I know Ypsi Township and Scio Township have Krogers. I also know that
a person without a car can have a tough time getting to any of these
places (this connects back to the issue of transportation). And the price of gas makes driving an extended distance for fresh food painful for all of us.
You may only feel strongly about one of these issues. You may not be sure where you stand on others. People of faith have come together to carefully address these issues. If you don’t agree with one of the issues, don’t clap when it’s brought up. But still attend, because your presence shows something very important to our elected officials: we care, and we are paying attention.
